What is A/B Testing?
A/B testing, also known as split testing, is a method of comparing two different versions of a web page, email, or advertisement to determine which one performs better. The purpose of A/B testing is to identify the most effective version of a given element by testing one variable at a time.
Understanding how A/B Testing works
A/B testing involves creating two versions of a web page or other element, each with a slight variation (such as a different headline, image, or call-to-action). The two versions are then shown to different segments of the target audience, and the results are analyzed to determine which version is more effective in terms of driving the desired action (such as making a purchase, filling out a form, or clicking a link). The winning version is then used for further testing and optimization.
Practical Example: Buy Now button color change

Let’s say we have an ecommerce website that sells shoes and we want to test whether changing the color of the “Buy Now” button from green to red will increase the conversion rate of visitors.
We randomly divide our website visitors into two groups – the control group, which sees the existing green “Buy Now” button, and the test group, which sees the red “Buy Now” button.
After collecting data for a week, we find that the control group had 500 visitors with 50 purchases, while the test group had 500 visitors with 70 purchases.
Now, let’s calculate the conversion rates for each group using the following formula:
Conversion rate = Number of conversions / Number of visitors x 100%
For the control group, the conversion rate is: 50 / 500 x 100% = 10%
For the test group, the conversion rate is: 70 / 500 x 100% = 14%
To determine if this difference in conversion rates is statistically significant, we can use a statistical significance test. One common test is the two-sample t-test, which uses the following formula:
t = (mean of group 1 – mean of group 2) / (standard error)
In this case, the mean of group 1 (the control group) is 10% and the mean of group 2 (the test group) is 14%. We can calculate the standard error using the following formula:
standard error = sqrt[(p1(1-p1)/n1) + (p2(1-p2)/n2)]
where p1 is the conversion rate of the control group, p2 is the conversion rate of the test group, n1 is the sample size of the control group, and n2 is the sample size of the test group.
Plugging in our values, we get: standard error = sqrt[(0.1 * 0.9 / 500) + (0.14 * 0.86 / 500)] standard error = 0.032
Now we can calculate the t-value: t = (0.14 – 0.1) / 0.032 t = 1.25
Using a t-table and a 95% confidence level and 998 degrees of freedom (1000 – 2), we find that the critical t-value is 1.96. Since our calculated t-value of 1.25 is less than the critical t-value, we cannot reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there is no statistically significant difference in conversion rates between the control group and the test group.
Therefore, based on these results, we cannot conclude that changing the “Buy Now” button from green to red will increase the conversion rate of visitors.

A/B testing allows businesses to make data-driven decisions and optimize their marketing efforts for better results. By continuously testing and refining different elements of their website or marketing campaigns, they can improve their conversion rates, increase revenue, and ultimately grow their business.
